Overview
This instructor-led track walks through real execution plans captured from SaaS workloads. You learn to annotate plans, compare shapes before and after index changes, and communicate findings to backend peers without drowning them in jargon. Labs use anonymized traces only—no operational dashboards with numeric overlays.
What is included
- Annotated plan walkthroughs with pause points
- Side-by-side comparisons after hypothetical index changes
- Checklist for separating CPU vs IO skew
- Vendor-neutral vocabulary sheet for cross-team briefings
- Office hours with a senior query coach
- Replayable screen captures of live tuning reviews
Outcomes
- Produce a one-page plan brief stakeholders can act on
- Spot three common mis-estimates before they hit production
- Recommend the next diagnostic command without guesswork
Primary coach
Hana Sato
Former platform engineer who still ships patches to open-source query engines on weekends.
FAQ
Do I need DBA access?
No. Read-only access to a staging clone is enough for every lab. We do not ship scripts that alter production.
Is Postgres the only engine?
Concepts transfer to other engines, but demos target PostgreSQL. A short appendix maps terminology for SQL Server teams.
What is not included?
We do not cover storage hardware procurement or host-level kernel tuning—that stays with your infrastructure group.
Experience notes
-
The week-two lab on nested loop vs hash joins finally made our weekly review less argumentative.
